Carina Engine

There are 2 major differences to starting this engine:

1) Glow plugs - use only in cold weather - 15 secs max

2) There is a danger of water backflow wrecking the engine if it continually turns over without firing (it should fire within 1 second), so if it doesn't light within 10 secs,release key and turn off the sea water inlet cock. Wait a few minutes then try again, opening sea cock as soon as the engine is running smoothly. Starter motor max 15 secs then allow 5 mins cooling.

Start
1) Throttle – Neutral, centre button in, set to 1 o’clock
2) Press Start On (for electrics)
3) Press Start On to start
4) Set sufficient RPM to set battery charging - should be 1200
5) Check water from exhaust (Port side Aft)
6) Run at low power for 5mins before increasing revs

Shut Down
1) Idle for 1 minute
2) Press Stop Button – hold in until engine stops completely.
3) Press Off Button to turn off electrics
4) If sailing - select Gear Lever to reverse

< Note that throttle Neutral position is at 10 o'clock (black line)
< This is to keep lever clear of mainsheet when advanced

Fuel burn - about 3 litre/hr

Engine access

The starboard side of the engine is the ‘service’ side

Front : Access for dipstick (front stbd) Impeller, (bottom stbd), oil fill (top)

Rear (from rear cabin) Access to header tank
and gear box (dip in unscrewed position)

Fire : Extinguisher point - port side of bottom companionway step
